Life and Death in Shanghai is an autobiography published in November 1987 by Nien Cheng. Written in exile in the United States, it tells the story of Cheng's arrest during the first days of the Cultural Revolution, her six-year imprisonment, release, persecution, efforts to leave China, and early life in exile.Find the more shanghai museums from SHINE.

Cheng was arrested in late 1966 after the Red Guards looted her home. During her imprisonment, she was pressured to make a false confession that she was a spy for "the imperialists" because for many years after the death of her husband she had continued to work as a senior partner for Shell in Shanghai. Cheng refused to provide a false confession, and was tortured as a result.

She was eventually paroled under the pretense that her attitude had shown improvement. However, Cheng resisted leaving prison without receiving acknowledgment from her captors that she had been unjustly imprisoned.

When released from jail in 1973, Cheng found that her daughter Meiping, who had been studying to become a film actress, had been murdered by the Red Guards, although the official position was that she had committed suicide. Cheng conducted a discreet investigation and found that this scenario was impossible.

After being relocated from her spacious home to a mere two bedrooms on the second floor of a two-story building, Cheng continued her life under constant surveillance, including spying by the family on the first floor.

She lived in China until 1980, when the political climate warmed enough for her to apply for a visa to the United States to visit family. She never returned, first emigrating to Canada, and later to Washington, D.C., where she wrote the autobiography.

The autobiography goes into great detail about her persecution, imprisonment and torture, so much so that the author had to put the manuscript away many times as she wrote it because the memories were so troubling.

So, bearing that in mind, Nielsen have given us their top 100 list of all-time Uk book sales. It shows volumes of each book, its publisher and genre. So, how does Fifty Shades compare?

It's not top on this list: that's got Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code at number one, followed by the Harry Potter novels. First thing to say is that the Highway Code dominates everything - but because it has been around for so long it artificially jumps near the top of the list with the many versions since 1998 selling over 4.8m copies. Syrian government forces launched a ground assault on the edge of the rebel-held eastern Ghouta enclave on Wednesday, seeking to gain territory despite a Russian plan for five-hour daily ceasefires, a war monitor and sources on both sides said.Find the more World news from SHINE.

Hundreds of people have died in 11 days of bombing of the eastern Ghouta, a swathe of towns and farms outside Damascus that is the last major rebel-controlled area near the capital.

The onslaught has been one of the fiercest of Syria’s civil war, now entering its eighth year.

The U.N. Security Council, including President Bashar al-Assad’s strongest ally Russia, passed a resolution on Saturday calling for a 30-day countrywide ceasefire. But the measure has not taken effect, with Moscow and Damascus saying they are battling members of terrorist groups excluded from the truce.

Russia has instead called for daily five-hour local ceasefires to establish what it calls a humanitarian corridor so aid can enter the enclave and civilians and wounded can leave.

The first such truce took place on Tuesday but quickly collapsed when bombing and shelling resumed after a short lull.

There were no air strikes during Wednesday’s five-hour ceasefire, but heavy bombardment resumed in the afternoon, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group reported. There has been no sign of aid deliveries to the besieged area.

President Vladimir Putin said that Russia had managed to evacuate "quite a big group” of civilians and that Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan had helped broker the evacuation. He did not say when the civilians had managed to leave.

State-run Anadolu news agency quoted Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin as saying Erdogan had asked for the evacuation of around 700 people from eastern Ghouta a month ago. Kalin said Russia told Turkey the civilians had been taken to southern Damascus a week later, despite Erdogan’s request for them to receive treatment in Turkey.Moscow and Damascus have accused rebels of shelling the corridor to prevent people leaving. Rebels deny this, and say people will not depart eastern Ghouta because they fear the government.

Wednesday’s ground assault targeted the Hawsh al-Dawahra area at the eastern edge of the enclave.

The Observatory reported advances by the government forces in the area, describing it as the resumption of an assault that first began on Feb. 25. It said rebels had inflicted heavy losses on government forces.

A record 84 high-rises were completed in the country out of 128 globally, according to a report by the U.S.-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, which conferred the top ranking on China. Hundreds more are in China’s pipeline for the coming years, with the 1,965-foot Ping An Finance Centre in Shenzhen poised to become the second tallest in the country if finished as planned this year (Shanghai Tower in China’s business capital is the tallest.).

By comparison, seven skyscrapers of comparable height were built last year in the U.S.

Once seen as a sign of China’s progress, the soaring supply of skyscrapers is becoming a symbol of the slowing Chinese economy. Overall office vacancy rates are inching higher as demand wanes from domestic companies facing higher costs and multinational firms cutting back expansion plans.

In China, companies have generally been slow to lease, renting 25% less overall office space over the first three quarters of 2016 compared with a year earlier, due to worries about economic growth and the flight of peer-to-peer lending firms after a regulatory crackdown, according to real-estate broker CBRE Group. The 121-story Shanghai Tower is a prominent example of struggles with leasing.

So why hasn’t momentum slowed?

Partly, it is because local governments in China, hoping to meet economic-growth targets, have a strong incentive to sell long-term leases to developers, who in turn may seek quick returns by building as much rentable space as possible per land parcel, says Daniel Safarik, China director for the Council on Tall Buildings.

"There is also a strong incentive for leaders of large cities to show economic progress in even more tangible ways, such as building the skyline,” Mr. Safarik said.Developers were particularly aggressive in Shenzhen, a tech hub where 11 high-rises 656 feet or taller were built last year, more than in any country besides China. Four towers of similar height were built in New York City last year.

Office-leasing troubles are starting to surface in the city, according to a third-quarter report from real estate broker Savills. The huge supply delayed some office-project launches, the broker said. Meanwhile, the overall amount of available space that was leased in the third quarter fell 35% from the previous quarter.

The Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang last month gave a boost to recent engagement between the two Koreas after more than a year of sharply rising tensions over the North’s missile programme and its sixth and largest nuclear test in defiance of United Nations sanctions.

"(Moon and Trump) agreed to continue to make efforts to head towards the Korean peninsula’s denuclearisation by maintaining the momentum of South-North dialogue,” the Blue House statement said.

In Washington, a White House statement on the two leaders’ call said Moon briefed Trump"on developments regarding North Korea and inter-Korean talks” but did not elaborate.

"The president wants to continue working with South Korea. It’s a strong ally. We have no daylight between the two of us. We’re going to continue those conversations,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters later on Thursday.

"The ultimate goal is to denuclearise the peninsula. That’s what we’re focused on and we’re excited about any steps moving forward in that process,” she said. In sending an envoy to Pyongyang, Moon said he would be seeking to reciprocate for the senior delegations sent to the Olympics by Kim Jong Un, including his sister, Kim Yo Jong, the first visit by a member of the North’s ruling bloodline since the 1950-53 Korean War.

Kim Yo Jong delivered her brother’s invitation for Moon to visit Pyongyang. Such a visit would mark the first inter-Korean summit since 2007. Moon is considering South Korea’s intelligence service chief Suh Hoon and Unification Minister Cho Myong-gyon as a possible special envoy to discuss the proposal, according to officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Other candidates include Moon’s chief of staff, Im Jong-seok, National Security Adviser Chung Eui-yong and Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon, the officials said.

Suh and Cho served in an earlier liberal administration that championed the"sunshine” policy of inter-Korean engagement.

A Unification Ministry spokesman told a news briefing on Friday Moon would send an envoy"soon”, once preparations had been made.
