How to Shut Off the Water Supply for a Kitchen Sink

Shutting off the water supply valve beneath a kitchen sink is the prerequisite to several common repair jobs, including faucet repairs and supply line replacement. Kitchen sink supply lines connect to a small, in-line shut-off valve, sometimes called an angle-stop valve, at the rear of the under-sink cabinet. Essentially, these valves function like a faucet handle; they consist of a knob that turns both clockwise and counterclockwise to allow or prevent the flow of water through the valve’s body.1.5m shower hose

Step 1

Rotate the sink’s faucet handle or knobs clockwise to turn the fixture to the off position. Open the under-sink cabinet’s doors. Turn on a flashlight and shine the flashlight into the under-sink cabinet.

Step 2

Look beyond the sink’s drain plumbing to the wall at the rear of the cabinet. Scan the wall for a set of metallic handles; sink shut-off valves have oblong or square-shaped handles. Because kitchen sinks have both hot and cold water shut-off valves, look for a set of two valves.

Step 3

Reach to the rear of the cabinet, grasp one of the valve handles and turn the handle clockwise. Turn the handle clockwise until fully tightened. Grasp the other valve handle and turn it clockwise until fully tightened. If it hurts your palm to grip and turn the handles, wrap a clean rag around the handle while turning. Open the sink’s faucet handles to check that the water supply is shut off.

I’m excited about this portable bidet because toilet paper is fucking disgusting

Every time I travel overseas, from my home base in India, I’m distressed by the thought of having to use only toilet paper to clean up below the belt. It’s gross, uncomfortable, and a lot less effective than using a bidet or a handheld water spray – the latter of which is fairly common in Indian cities, as well as in Japan.portable shattaf bidet

Granted, it isn’t easy to start a bidet spray revolution across the world, because that would require having new plumbing and fittings installed. But there’s a glimmer of hope in the form of Sonny, an electronic portable bidet spray that’s currently crowdfunding on Indiegogo.
The $89 device – which appears to be about as long as a 500ml water bottle – charges via USB and houses a cartridge that you can fill with water from a tap. Put the filled cartridge back in, and you can spray to clean your nether regions with a pressurized water flow. The nozzle can be removed and washed, and it retracts into the cylindrical body when it’s not in use.

The company notes that in addition to making your ablutions more hygienic, it’ll also help you reduce your impact on the environment by cutting down drastically on your toilet paper usage.
I’m down with all of that. My only concern is whether the Sonny’s compact design will deliver effective cleaning, with the necessary amount of water and pressure.

It baffles me that most countries in the developed world don’t use bidets or sprays. The Atlantic had an interesting piece last year on why the US has been reluctant to adopt them – and the challenge of additional plumbing is understandable. But even with affordable aftermarket options like this $69 model from Tushy and this $25 one from Brondell, it’s odd that the trend hasn’t caught on.

As with all crowdfunded products, you should be wary of the risks associated with backing these campaigns. Sonny says its product has been in the works since 2017, and that it’s set to begin shipping orders this December. For what it’s worth, it’s surpassed its funding goal by nearly four times its target.

Trends in personal protective equipment 2018

From hard hats to steel toe boots, personal protective equipment covers workers from head to toe.personal protective equipment products

Safety+Health, with the help of the International Safety Equipment Association, recently reached out to PPE manufacturers with three questions: What PPE trends are happening, what challenges are your customers reaching out to you with, and what technological innovations are here or on the horizon?
In the light-duty manufacturing industries, we’ve seen an increased demand for seamless gloves with greater dexterity and increased cut-resistance. In addition, the pressure from purchasers to decrease costs on PPE seems to be higher than ever.”

"One of the most common trends we see at our clients’ locations is the lack of a formal hazard assessment. A hazard assessment, including a thorough PPE review, is the critical first step in the selection of the proper PPE for specific job tasks and the worksite.”
"End-user demand for lighter protective apparel and equipment has been the driving force behind a significant number of innovations in textile, garment and faceshield design. The key is finding products that still provide the appropriate amount of protection but at a fraction of the weight.”

"In the molten metal sector, lighter-weight fabrics are keeping workers cooler and more comfortable while protecting them from molten metal splash. Instead of heavy, aluminized 16-plus-ounce fabric, which has been the industry standard for 30-plus years, the current trend is toward 10- to 12-ounce fabrics. These lighter-weight garments can offer the same protection and are more comfortable to wear.”

"As the dropped objects standard is nearing completion, PPE is being put under the microscope as a potential dropped object hazard. Companies nationwide are taking notice because the proposed standard is in its later stages and nearly prepared for ANSI adoption. While a lot of companies are seeing this upcoming standard as a way of improving tool safety, those who are really on the leading edge of safety are also taking note of PPE items and the effect they have on safety.”

Valance Scarves Used for Window Treatments

Valance scarves are an appealing way to stylize an ordinary window. These versatile fabric panels can be customized or ready-made with unlimited fabric choices and mounting hardware available. A valance scarf adds softness that gracefully frames the top of your window while extending down the sides. The scarves can be self-lined, contrast-lined or unlined, as draping details typically reveal both the front and back, especially along the folds and the side jabots.luxury curtain accessories
The benefits of adding fabric to frame your windows are numerous. Besides aesthetic appeal, fabric can increase a room’s energy efficiency by trapping air that might otherwise leak into a room in minute pockets. Acoustic benefits can minimize the echoing caused by hard surfaces such as tiled floors and granite countertops. Valance scarves can be mounted several inches beyond a window casing to visually extend the height and width.
When dressing a kitchen window, it can be a challenge to find the perfect style that will endure daily activities centered at the sink. A valance scarf can provide the perfect solution by framing your view and remaining a safe distance from dishwashing splashes. In task areas, such as kitchens and utility rooms, consider installing a decorative café rode to match cabinets or hardware and draping a machine-washable fabric such as textured cotton or sheer batiste for easy care.

Windows getting the full treatment with stylish rods

Sleek, metallic and secured on each end with elaborate orbs of glass or finials of wrought iron, today’s curtain rods aren’t just hanging around anymore — they’re adding some serious style to modern window treatments.

Curtain rods have lived a mostly clandestine life. Hidden under yards of muslin or yellowed antique lace, they rarely saw the light of day.resin curtain rod finials

But all that has changed.

Sleek, metallic and secured on each end with elaborate orbs of glass or finials of wrought iron, today’s curtain rods aren’t just hanging around anymore — they’re adding some serious style to modern window treatments.

"Generally, drapery rods are not the main event, but have a supporting role,” said La Grange resident Mary Lou Kalmus, owner/interior designer of Designing Edge in Clarendon Hills. "You want to have the right scale and look. Sometimes you want them hidden, like in a rod pocket, and others may want to make a statement. You need to coordinate the style, level of sophistication and function. It is like an accessory.”

Bolingbrook resident Monique Fisher of Interiors by Monique said she bases her purchases on what type of drapery rod is needed to complete the client’s desired look.

While the rod may not be the most important element in an interior design or redesign plan, Fisher said, "People really have an opinion on what they want. They consider it important.”

And options abound for those looking to update their window treatments. Taste and design dictate whether rods hold up stationary drapery panels, support drapes with tabs that fit over the rod, or bear rings attached to fabric, said Wording resident Melissa Secor, senior designer at Dream Interiors in Downers Grove. And with the right finials, Secor said just the right tone can be set for a window treatment. Look for finials in many styles and materials, such as crystal, iron or wood.

Electronic SMT PCB Assembly and Production Process, posted by China supplier Topscom

Within a printed circuit board electronics assembly / production or manufacturing process there are a number of individual stages. However it is necessary for them all to work together to form an integrated overall process. Each stage of assembly and production must be compatible with the next, and there must be feedback from the output to the input to ensure that the highest quality is maintained. In this way any problems are detected quickly and the process can be adjusted accordingly.smt pcb assembly process
The various stages in the PCB assembly process including adding solder paste to the board, pick and place of the components, soldering, inspection and test. All these processes are required, and need to be monitored to ensure that product of the highest quality is produced. The PCB assembly process described below assumes that surface mount components are being used as virtually all PCB assembly these days uses surface mount technology.

Solder paste: Prior to the addition of the components to a board, solder paste needs to be added to those areas of the board where solder is required. Typically these areas are the component pads. This is achieved using a solder screen.

The solder paste is a paste of small grains of solder mixed with flux. This can be deposited into place in a process that is very similar to some printing processes.

Using the solder screen, placed directly onto the board and registered in the correct position , a runner is moved across the screen squeezing a small mount of solder paste through the holes in the screen and onto the board. As the solder screen has been generated from the printed circuit board files, it has holes on the positions of the solder pads, and in this way solder is deposited only on the solder pads.

The amount of solder that is deposited must be controlled to ensure the resulting joints have the right amount of solder.
Pick and place: During this part of the assembly process, the board with the added solder paste is then passed into the pick and place process. Here a machine loaded with reels of components picks the components from the reels or other dispensers and places them onto the correct position on the board.

The components placed onto the board are held in place by the tension of the solder paste. This is sufficient to keep them in place provided that the board is not jolted.

In some assembly processes, the pick and place machines add small dots of glue to secure the components to the board. However this is normally done only if the board is to be wave soldered. The disadvantage of the process is that any repair is made far more difficult by the presence of the glue, although some glues are designed to degrade during the soldering process.

Benefits of Multilayer Printed Circuit Boards | Blog

Most PCB manufacturers are finding the demand for multilayer boards increasing by leaps and bounds. This growing demand is fed by the need for smaller, lighter boards for use in electrical devices, military equipment, healthcare miniaturization, and an expanding market for smart devices incorporated in home automation systems.multilayer pcb advantages
Smartphones and computers are perfect applications for multilayer PCBs with their need for compactness and light weight, yet sophisticated functionality.
From a technical standpoint, there are numerous advantages to the use of multilayer designs, over and above saving space and weight:
By incorporating multiple layers in a single PCB, boards can increase functionality.
Manufacturing processes for multilayer boards result in high-quality, reliable end products.
Multilayer boards by their innate electrical properties provide high capacity and high speed in a smaller footprint.
Higher density of assembly
Connectors required for multiple separate PCBs are reduced or eliminated, simplifying construction and further reducing weight.
Multilayer PCBs can be manufactured in both rigid and flexible construction. Be advised though, that the more layers incorporated in a flex PCB, the less flexible it becomes.
Every technology has pros and cons, and multilayer PCBs are not immune from negative attributes:
Cost – one of the primary negatives in designing and implementing multilayer PCBs is the cost. As specialized processes are involved in the manufacturing of these boards, there is a considerable investment required for fabricators to offer these services. This makes the cost of multilayer boards higher than a traditional single or double-sided board.
Service availability – not all PCB manufacturers have made the commitment to manufacturing these complex boards, limiting the resource options available to PCB designers.
Compactness of multilayer boards generates design concerns for such issues as crosstalk and impedance problems.
With increased functionality comes the need for more extensive testing of a single PCB. Manufacturing cycles may also be longer, due to the very complexity of the manufacturing process.
Repairing a multilayer PCB can be extremely difficult, and may even be unfeasible or impossible. This makes failure of a multilayer board costly, since it may need to be totally replaced.
Interconnection between layers is critical for board function, making design and fabrication of microvias and overall density critical.

What Are Electric Door Locks and How Do They Work?

Electronic door locks are a way to replace keys or to add additional automation features, like remote locking or unlocking. Although most commonly found on cars, many cutting-edge security providers are offering electronic door locks for homes and businesses.door lock system using bluetooth

In any type of door lock, a latch or bolt is made to cross the opening between the side of the door and the doorframe, preventing access. This can be a "spring bolt,” which is held in place by springs and allows the door to close (but not reopen) when locked, or the more secure "dead bolt,” which stays in place until manually unlocked. In both cases, locking and unlocking is achieved by rotating the visible element (a knob or a key in a lock cylinder) to move the bolt or latch.

Traditional key locks use some variation of the "pin and tumbler” method, in which the lock cylinder is held in place with a line of small metal pins, each of which consists of an upper and lower half. When a key is inserted and turned, the uneven "serrated” edge ensures that each pin is moved a certain distance. The cylinder may be turned only when each pin is moved just enough to create a straight separation between the upper and lower halves of all pins.

Electronic door locks also involve parts called "actuators,” which connect the bolt or the cylinder to a small motor completely buried within the door or frame itself. The motor is controlled by an electrical impulse, which may be triggered in a number of ways: by an electronic card reader, by a keypad or by a wireless remote control sensor. Either way, the electronic door lock is configured to start the motor-driven actuator only once it has received the correct electronic input.

Each method of locking has pros and cons. Physical keys, such as metal keys, key cards or handheld remotes, can be lost or damaged, while numerical key codes can be forgotten (or learned and memorized by the wrong person). Key codes can be quickly and easily changed by the user when necessary, while changing physical locks and keys is much more involved, requiring specialized hardware and expertise. Power failures are problematic for purely electronic door locks, causing them to remain locked or unlocked until the electricity has been restored.
On most electronic door locks, you’ll find some combination of physical and electronic locking control on the same door. For example, you may have a physical key for setup and emergency backup, but use the remote or keypad to lock and unlock the door on a day-to-day basis. This provides an extra layer of convenience and safety for the user, but may also provide additional functionality as well.

Loaded gun in diaper bag goes off, injuring father and daughter

A man with a loaded gun in a diaper bag shot himself and his daughter while changing his daughter’s diaper in a vehicle in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, police said.
CNN affiliates report the incident happened Saturday afternoon, either at or near a Chuck E. Cheese’s pizza parlor in the Birmingham suburb.
The father, who was not identified, was in the back seat of a vehicle changing the girl’s diaper, and the gun went off as he picked up or reached inside the bag, which was sitting on the floorboard, Vestavia Hills Police Department spokesman Capt. Johnny Evans said.adventuridge picnic cooler bag

After the gun went off, the bullet traveled through the adult’s leg and then the child’s leg before lodging in the man’s chest, Evans said.
The child is going to be OK. Her father is in serious condition, he said.
CNN affiliate WBMA reported the shooting happened near Chuck E. Cheese’s, while another affiliate, WBRC, said it occurred in the parking lot of the child-themed pizza and gaming center.
John and Ashley Gerrard of Bessemer were at Chuck E. Cheese’s with their 2-year-old when the shooting happened, leaving them worried for their daughter’s safety, WBRC reported.

"You don’t expect anyone would bring a gun around where kids would be. It just doesn’t make any sense,” John Gerrard told the station.

HRSG Health: Efficiency and Performance

FROM THE FEBRUARY ISSUE: Plants built in the ethanol construction peak are approaching 10 to 15 years of operation, and many are exploring whether to repair or replace. HRST Inc. has some advice.
The thermal oxidizer (TO) heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) is a staple system for many ethanol plants built during the mid-2000s construction boom. As plants near the 10- to 15-year operating mark, performance and efficiency might be the deciding factor between repairing or replacing equipment. Routinely inspecting and quantifying performance can improve the reliability and operation of an existing HRSG, extending the life of the system. hrsg boiler design
Assessing the condition of the HRSG is a critical first step in determining its overall health. Having a comprehensive water- and gas-side inspection helps establish a baseline condition of the HRSG that can be compared to future inspection findings. Comparing can be qualitative and simple, "The tubes appear more oxidized than last year;” or more quantitative and complex, "The material thinning in this location is 1/16 of an inch and last year it was at 1/32 of an inch.”
A variety of locations should be observed on the water and gas side. Knowing at-risk areas can help determine where to look and when. Inspection areas for a typical TO/HRSG configuration include the HRSG inlet from the TO, the evaporator section of the HRSG, steam drum connections and internals and the packaged economizer. Important items and components to observe in these locations are: liner and baffle condition; tube-to-header connections/welds; external tube fouling, corrosion and oxidation; internal tube deposits or material loss; steam separation equipment and configuration; and overall as-built design (pipe size, configuration, material).
Temperature is a key factor in how efficiently the HRSG components operate. In HRSGs that are fired harder (e.g., a TO burner that is pushed to its maximum firing rating), metal components often exceed the recommended design limit temperature. Liners, baffles and tubes are all susceptible to overheat.

Overheated liners might oxidize, warp or break off studs when thermal expansion causes them to distort. As the liner sheets distort and expose insulation, the high temperature turbulent gas flow can wear away the insulation and cause hot spots on the HRSG.

Baffles become brittle and degrade over time as they overheat, eventually allowing the flue gas flow to bypass the tube bank, resulting in lower HRSG performance. In the case of bypass along the sidewalls of the evaporator, the increased flow along the panel end tubes will disproportionately cause tubes to overperform and generate more steam than the tubes toward the center of the panels. The evaporator tubes are less susceptible to overheat damage, but the fin material will begin to oxidize and break off until the fin tip temperature is at the material threshold. While this is not a reliability concern, it can lower the performance of the evaporator. Tube leaks or failures often occur at the tube-to-header connection. This can be caused by high stress at the weld joint, often related to the geometry of the tube-to-header connection, but sometimes because of flow conditions on the water or gas side. Performing a gas-side inspection at the beginning of a shutdown can allow more time for tube leaks to be identified and repaired. Depending on the location within the bundle, this could be a time-consuming process. When tube failures occur, a root cause failure analysis (RCFA) should be performed to determine the failure mechanism, in addition to implementing a preventative operation or maintenance procedure to mitigate future failures. Don’t just weld the crack; involve someone who can review the location, failure and maintenance history.
